You might not believe in New Year's resolutions, and probably for good reason. Chances are, if you've ever made any, you've also broken more than a few. But when you take away the special name, they're really just goals, and we're always supposed to set goals for ourselves, right? With that in mind, here are a few goals -- or resolutions, if you will -- for 2009 for those of us in the world of tennis, whether we're players, coaches, fans or members of the ever-excitable media.
Novak Djokovic: I'll forget about all the talking I did about becoming No. 1 at the beginning of 2008 and get back to just winning matches and tournaments. The rest might take care of itself.
Larry Stefanki: As Andy Roddick's new coach, I'll do what I've said I'm going to do, which is beef up his return of serve. After that, I might just take a look at that forehand volley grip.
John McEnroe: I'll follow my gut by staying in the booth and keeping my tediously angry act off the court.
David Nalbandian: Now that the Davis Cup has been blown, I'll show up for the rest of the season.
Jelena Jankovic: Now that I'm No. 1, I'll forgo the ranking points and try to peak for the four tournaments that a No. 1 is supposed to win.
Roger Federer: I'll begin conserving late-career energy by keeping points shorter.
Rafael Nadal: I'll begin conserving midcareer energy by … keeping my fist-pumps shorter?
Ana Ivanovic: Where's that old T-shirt of mine, the one that read, "No time for love"? I might need to remember that in 2009.
Fernando Verdasco: I will burn that shirt.
Serena Williams: I'll be more superstitious than ever. You see, I won the Aussie Open in 2003, 2005, 2007 and now...
Venus Williams: Wherever I play, I'll wear all white and pretend there's nice green grass beneath my feet.
Nicole Vaidisova: I'll start with a smile and go from there.
Richard Gasquet: I'll try not to be so damn smooth all the time. Maybe I'll play a little tougher.
Andy Murray: I'll keep doing whatever it was I've been doing, right down to my close morning shave.
Dinara Safina: I will not, repeat, will not succumb to the drop-back-to-earth syndrome that so clearly awaits me this season.
Gael Monfils: I will not, repeat, will not be scared of Mardy Fish ever again.
Marin Cilic, Sam Querrey, Juan Martin del Potro, Ernests Gulbis: I'll be the first of the baby giants to make it to the net. (But don't tell any of the other guys.)
Tennis fans and members of the media:
We will not write off Nadal in the middle of March.
We will not forecast the imminent freak-out and retirement of Federer after his first loss.
We will learn to stop worrying about the Williams sisters' post-loss comments and begin to appreciate them before they're gone.
We will watch more doubles (you're going to break one resolution, so you might as well give yourself an easy out).
Most of all, we will, in this time of worldwide gloom and onrushing depression, be happy to have tennis back for another year.
The 30-metre maxi finished the 628-nautical mile race down the Australian eastern seaboard in one day 20 hours 34 minutes and 14 seconds. Wild Oats XI holds the race record of one day 18 hours 40 minutes 10 seconds set in its 2005 win. The record was under threat up until early Sunday when the prevailing winds subsided in the Derwent River.
Another maxi, 2003 winner Skandia, finished second, one hour and seven minutes behind Wild Oats XI, while Quest was leading the race on handicap. Wild Oats XI last year equalled the record of the three successive Sydney-Hobart wins of Morna from 1946-48.
Sunday's record-breaking triumph was not without incident. The Mark Richards-skippered vessel was forced to stop temporarily late Saturday to free a two-metre (6.5 foot) shark from its rudder. Richards said the collision with the shark proved a godsend. He said his boat had underperformed after picking something up on its keel leaving Sydney Harbour on Friday.
Richards said having to stop and reverse to clear the shark also removed whatever was dragging on the yacht. "The second we got him off, the boat was back to its old self," Richards told reporters. He said his crew knew upon leaving Sydney Harbour there was something impeding the yacht. The skipper said he had contemplated sending a crew member over the side to inspect the keel. "But we just never stopped. When you are doing 20-25 knots all the time it's a hard thing to work out what to actually do," he said.
"So we were waiting for the opportunity but in the end we didn't have one -- we had to do it anyway." Wild Oats XI crew member Peter Shipway said competitors Skandia had them worried throughout the blue water classic.
"She was very competitive against us and we just couldn't nail her for a long, long while," Shipway said. "It was only yesterday (Saturday) when it (winds) got a bit light and flukey that we got in front of her." Skandia led Wild Oats XI for much of the race but its slight advantage was wiped out late Saturday. "Once they sailed up to us when the wind shut down last night we knew that was going to be the end of the fun," Skandia skipper Grant Wharington said.
This year Wild Oats XI did not have a major international maxi to compete against, with the ongoing Volvo Ocean Race depriving the Australian event of some powerful overseas entrants.
Ichi Ban was third across the line ahead of ASM Shockwave 5 and Limit with the remainder of the 2008 fleet expected to finish the race in the coming days.
Virtua Tennis PS3 has been released lately and is lukewarmely received. That's not to say VirtuaTennis 3 isn't fun -- it's a blast, in fact. But, like Richie Tenenbaum's mental game, it does have issues. The biggest problem is the incessant diving that keeps the ball in play. Players will lay out like Boris Becker at Wimbledon, but instead of an occasionally reckless dive, they can go headlong three or four times per rally. The court surface doesn't intimidate them, either. They'll even dive on the hard court -- and why not? There are no repercussions, not a skinned knee nor a shredded elbow.
The obnoxious diving paired with the lack of unforced errors results in unrealistically lengthy rallies. You can get into back-and-forths that last over 25 hits each on a regular basis if two skilled players are going head-to-head. Along the way, so many win-worthy hits are denied. One of the keys to success is hitting the ball at full power -- which is done by holding the button a very long time, which will allow your player to unleash his (or her) fury on the ball. To get that kind of hit, you also need to stand still for the duration of the button press. The mechanic is too simple, and after a few hours of these rallies, your saddle joint will be sore and your thumb will be as flat as a nickel.
The good news is that each point becomes a game within a game -- just like in real tennis. It's great fun to trip up your opponent by hitting the ball down the line when they're expecting you to smack it crosscourt. Unfortunately, the net play is broken. Instead of knifing the ball down, you sort of loft it up with each net hit, making it easy to return.
But gameplay gripes aside, the biggest "What the...!?" is the complete omission of generic players. It might sound odd, clamoring for fake people to be inserted into the game, but it really screws up the career mode as you'll only play against pros. That would be fine if Sega had licensed 200 players, but instead they licensed 20. In career mode, you start out as the 300-ranked player and your opponents play to your level...even Roger Federer, the greatest tennis player since Björn Borg, and possibly the best ever. But at the 300 level, you'll smack him around, completely clown him -- he may not even score a point. Then, as you advance to the 200 or 100 ranking level, he'll turn you inside out. You'll get used to it, but it's a pretty significant oversight. What's more annoying is when these pros will come "chat" with you between matches -- it's supposed to be a reward when Rafael Nadal acknowledges that you're up-and-coming, but the effect is lost when he just moves his mouth while generic text shows up at the bottom of the screen. The minigames make up for that, but there's nothing new -- if you're a Virtua Tennis aficionado, you've seen it all before.
In the end, the sharp graphics trump the competition (2K Sports' Top Spin 2), but the oversights in gameplay and the pros-only career mode hold Virtua Tennis back from being a must-play. For a quick knock-around with friends, this can't be beat, but for a deeper, more authentic tennis experience, go with Top Spin 2.
By Todd Zuniga -- 20/3/2007
"He wants to go hard for another two years, at least, and he believes he can get back into the top 10."
Hewitt has a big fan in both men, formerly his Davis Cup captain and coach, as the 27-year-old makes a recovery from his summer hip operation. Hewitt's goal is to finally win the Australian Open which start January 19.
To get up to speed, the former number one and double Grand Slam champion will play for Australia at the Hopman Cup starting a week from Saturday in Perth, then move onto Sydney for his "home" event.
Hewitt currently stands a distant 67th as Aussie tennis looks in vain for a new generation on court. He and Chris Guccione (98th) are the lone rangers in the ATP Top 100 for the one-time tennis titans. Hewitt last reached the Top 10 in June 2006, claiming the last of his titles two springs ago in Las Vegas.
While Newk gives Hewitt his best wishes, the former No. 1 is also keen on the chances of Andy Murray to continue his breakthrough in the face of stern competition from Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Melbourne holder Novak Djokovic.
"Give him 12 months, and if he stays healthy, I'd be surprised if he's not in the top 10."
And the grand old man advises: "If Lleyton plays defensively and relies on counter-attack, he's not going to get back in the top 10.
"If he backs himself, hits backhands down the line, gets his forehand going down the line and doesn't get stuck in this thing of hitting everything cross-court, he can do anything."

But global powerhouse IMG and the French Lagardere Group, which handles Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon, are also keen on Murray, the report said.
CAA also has Novak Djokovic, world number three, on its marketing books along with Hollywood stars including Tom Cruise and Murray's favourite comedian Will Ferrell.
The newspaper said that up to 100 million dollars or a multi-year pact could be at stake, with IMG counting on it's client list of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to help its cause.
Murray, who will play at the weekend in an exhibition in Abu Dhabi with Federer and Nadal among others, has apparently split with his homegrown management group, which did manage to secure him sponsor ships with Highland Spring water, Head rackets, Royal Bank of Scotland and the British Fred Perry clothing firm.
The former Wimbledon semi-finalist, 25, outlasted fellow Australian junior Monica Wejnert, 6-7 (3/7), 7-5, 6-3 in just over two hours in the final of a playoff tournament for wildcard entry into the year's first grand slam.
Dokic said she will try to qualify for lead-up tournaments in Brisbane and Hobart over the coming weeks before taking her place in the field for the January 19-February 1 Australian Open.
Dokic, who has improved her ranking to 179, said that next year would be her final attempt at a comeback to the WTA world tour after admitting last year that she was on the verge of quitting the game.
He then lost to Novak Djokovic in a closely-fought title match setting the stage for a breakthrough year that saw him rise to sixth place in the world rankings. "I will go into the Australian Open as one of the possible winners. I am sure of that," Tsonga said on Tuesday.
"The Grand Slam tournaments are what it is all about. I can't wait to get down there and get on with it. "I am very ambitious for next year and Melbourne will be crucial to what follows. If I can get a good result, I will be well-placed to climb even higher."
Tsonga, who has a history of injuries, said he was "three-quarters" ready with his physical preparation and that he had "never felt better."
He gets his season underway at the Sydney ATP tournament on January 5 with the Australian Open Tennis Live starting on January 19.
I'm eager to see Lleyton Hewitt back on the court since he is my favorite tennis player and hopefully he gets a good run this time. Female players like Svetlana Kuznetsova, Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic, Serena and Venus Williams and last year's Champion Maria Sharapova are on the roster for the women's singles. Round 1 (Day 1) Highlights: 16 year-old Bernard Tomic (No. 768) made the biggest surprise of the first day, eliminating Potito Starace 7-6 1-6 7-6 7-6. Tomic who has been playing just second tournament on the main level (debuted two weeks ago in Adelaide) becomes the youngest player who won a match at the Australian Open (16 years and 103 days), and the second youngest who appearanced in the main draw of this tournament. Tomic’s compatriot Lleyton Hewitt, was 15 years and 337 days old when he lost in the 1997 first round to Sergi Bruguera. Tomic astonished favourable Australian crowd on the Margaret Court Arena holding nerves in tight situations what is characteristic for experienced, much more older players. The Australian prodigy was losing 2:4 in the third set and 1:4 (0-30) in the fourth, saved also two set points at 4:6 in the last tie-break! It’s just fourth case in Australian Open history that a player won a four-setter winning three sets in tie-breaks (previously did it Todd Martin, Max Mirnyi and Marat Safin). “It’s a dream come true to win a first round in my first Grand Slam,” said Tomic. “I’m just thrilled that I could pull off a win today. With the crowd behind me, it was an unbelievable experience”.
Round 1 (Day 2) Highlights: The main favorite for the title, Andy Murray needed only 45 minutes to advance to the second round. His opponent, Andre Pavel playing first ATP match since February 2008, was forced to withdraw due to a back injury. Pavel announced that he will finish career in Bucharest later this year.
In one of the most anticipated first round clashes, between past Australian Open finalists, Fernando Gonzalez overcame Lleyton Hewitt 5-7 6-2 6-2 3-6 6-3. “I knew it was going to be tough against Lleyton,” said Gonzalez. “He’s a great player, a great competitor. This was the first official match of the year. So I’m happy the way that I did it, and a little bit tired. But it’s fine now.”
Round 2 (Day 3) Highlights: Roger Federer and Marat Safin rolled to easy victories Wednesday against first-time opponents to reach the Australian Open’s third round, where the familiarity factor will be much higher: They’ll be playing each other. “I’m happy to be playing Marat; we have fought some battles,” Federer said after ousting error-prone Evgeny Korolev of Russia 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 in just 86 minutes. “We had the epic in 2005.”
That was a semifinal thriller here that Safin won in a 9-7 fifth set en route to the championship. Federer, seeking to tie Pete Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slam titles, has won their last three meetings, including the last two at Wimbledon.
Round 2 (Day 4) Highlights:
Rafael Nadal has abandoned his trademark sleeveless tops and capri pants for T-shirts and above-the-knee shorts at this year’s Australian Open. Not everyone likes it. Sports bloggers and fan forums have been puzzled by his new attire, with at least one female blogger complaining that she missed seeing his sculpted biceps. Nadal shrugged off the interest. “For sure, when you have a change, some people like (it), other people don’t,” Nadal said. “Not everybody liked the sleeveless. Right now (is) gonna be the same, no?”By far the biggest upset of the day was Carla Suarez Navarro’s defeat of 6th seed Venus Williams. This is the first time that the Spaniard has really showed her world-beating capabilities outside of the clay. The only other upset in the women’s draw today happened when Virginie Razzano ended the hopes of 14th seed Patty Schnyder. For the men, 25th seed Ivo Karlovic was knocked out by compatriot Mario Ancic in five sets.
Round 3 (Day 5) Highlights:
Day 5 of the Australian Open seemed to be more about individual performance than heart-stopping matches. Veterans and young players alike delighted the crowds as we said good-bye to Fabrice Santoro in his final match in Melbourne, Jelena Dokic won and continued her dream run with support from the crowd, and even Ai Sugiyama of Japan gave Jelena Jankovic a tough match as she charged the net, attacked the corners and used all her years of experience to make Jankovic fight to win the match. The night, however, provided a few upsets as Ana Ivanovic, the reigning French Open champion and a finalist last year, fell in 3 sets to the 29th seed Alisa Kleybanova of Russia at Rod Laver Arena in a stunning upset. As the women continued their shaky matches, the men's top seeds continued to march into the round of 16.
Round 4 (Day 7) Highlights:
The Australian Open was blown wide open on Sunday when top seed Jelena Jankovic crashed out while Roger Federer was forced to mount a memorable comeback to beat Tomas Berdych.
The Serb's crushing 6-1, 6-4 defeat to French 16th seed Marion Bartoli put her alongside Ana Ivanovic and Venus Williams as high-profile early round casualties, raising further questions about her world number one status.
It was the first time Federer has come from two sets down since Miami in 2005, and he sees it as a good omen. "Tomas did so well and he pushed me to the limit," said the Swiss three-time champion. "I enjoy those kinds of fights because they don't happen very often, especially on Rod Laver Arena. I hope it is a good omen. "I feel in great shape, I feel like I could go another two sets."If you're looking for Australian Open tournament news and articles click here .

I think SEO contests are not much different from spam. It's a useless and annoying piece of work done by self-declared "SEO Experts" to showcase their SEO exploits. For the sponsor of the contest, it does give him instant one way traffic to his website which is always a good thing. I will not be surprised if Google penalizes such websites that promote SEO contests. Such SEO competition is just a facade or a cover-up for the abuse of Google's technology. I know Google is for the accuracy and relevancy of it's content for the search made by the user and by performing these kind of tactics, the algorithm of Google's ranking system is being manipulated to gain advantage over "real" content. Having read a lot of SEO articles and seeing websites/blogs on top of the search rankings that contains so much crap, I think it's time for Google to re-evaluate the most common searched words and manually rank websites according to actual content other than what their robots can crawl upon.

Carrey's comedy "Yes Man" opened at No. 1 with $18.2 million in ticket sales, while Smith's drama "Seven Pounds" came in second with $16 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Debuting at No. 3 with $10.5 million was Matthew Broderick's animated family flick "The Tale of Despereaux."
The new movies arrived in theaters Friday just as storms pounded the Northeast." Those markets back east just got hammered," said Chris Aronson, distribution executive for 20th Century Fox, whose sci-fi saga "The Day the Earth Stood Still" slipped from No. 1 to No. 4 with $10.2 million. The movie starring Keanu Reeves raised its 10-day total to $48.6 million.
"Yes Man," released by Warner Bros., stars Carrey as a loser who turns his life around by subscribing to a philosophy of saying "yes" to everything. Sony's "Seven Pounds" casts Smith as a mysterious IRS agent doing good deeds for strangers, and Universal's "Tale of Despereaux" features Broderick as the mouthpiece for a tiny mouse on a heroic mission.
In limited release, Mickey Rourke's acclaimed drama "The Wrestler" had a heavyweight debut, taking in $209,474 in just four theaters for a whopping average of $52,369.
By comparison, "Yes Man" played in 3,434 theaters and averaged $5,288 per theater, while "Seven Pounds" opened in 2,758 theaters and averaged $5,801 per theater. The No. 3 film "The Tale of Despereaux" played in 3,104 theaters and grabbed $3,385 per venue.
The film released by Fox Searchlight stars Rourke as a former wrestling champion struggling for one last taste of past glory. The comeback theme of "The Wrestler" parallels Rourke's real life, with the actor in the running for an Academy Award nomination after his bad boy behavior virtually ruined his career in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
"Yes Man" played in 3,434 theaters and averaged $5,288 per theater, while "Seven Pounds" opened in 2,758 theaters and averaged $5,801 per theater. The No. 3 film "The Tale of Despereaux" played in 3,104 theaters and grabbed $3,385 per theater.
While winter came in with a bang, Hollywood's solid year was going out with a whimper. The overall box office plunged for the second straight weekend as this season's pre-holiday offerings continued to lag far behind the strong finish provided by such 2007 hits as Smith's "I Am Legend" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks."
The top 12 movies took in $82.8 million, down 44 percent from the same weekend last year, when "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" led with $44.8 million.
The last two ho-hum weekends have hindered Hollywood's shot at breaking the domestic revenue record of $9.7 billion set last year. Revenues through Sunday were at $9.24 billion, virtually even with 2007 through the same date, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers.
Given the sour economy, studio executives generally are satisfied with this year's results. Hollywood tends to ride out recessions with solid business, since movies are relatively inexpensive compared to entertainment options such as concerts or sports events.
"The movie business may be recession-proof, but this weekend, it's not weather-proof," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

2. "Seven Pounds," $16 million.

DIGIC III Image Processor With DIGIC III, your images boast superior quality, the camera operates at top efficiency and battery life is enhanced. What’s more, DIGIC III enables Canon’s Face Detection Technology and Red-eye Correction to give you better, more true-to-life people shots. Simply press the Shutter Button halfway down, and the camera automatically pinpoints the faces in the scene and chooses the ideal focus point. The camera controls exposure settings and flash to keep every face looking bright and natural. Red-eye Correction can be handled in-camera, in two ways. The entirely new Red-eye Correction during shooting uses the Face Detection Technology to recognize and remove red-eye from flash images as they're taken, before the file is written to the memory card. It's also possible to correct red-eye during image playback, using simple settings in the A590 IS's menu.
iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC III Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.
Face Detection Technology
Canon's powerful Face Detection Technology delivers even better results with the new A590 IS. The Face Detection Technology continues to recognize faces in a scene, and concentrate exposure (daylight or flash) and focus upon them. But the A590 IS adds more: Face Detection WB means the camera concentrates upon faces when calculating white balance for the best possible skin tones. Face Select and Track lets the A590 IS user highlight one face among several in a scene, and the camera concentrates on that person, even as they move around the scene. Face Detection Technology is a powerful contributing factor in Canon's new Motion Detection Technology.
Red-eye Correction Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures.
* The new Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken.
* The A590 IS can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback.
* The user can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.
High ISO The PowerShot A590 IS features ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto settings that reduce the effects of camera shake and sharpen subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility.
Motion Detection Technology automatically reduces blur Life doesn’t stand still for picture-taking. That’s why Canon included its advanced Motion Detection Technology in the PowerShot A590 IS. This sophisticated feature works in the background to instantly evaluate how fast your subject is moving. Then it automatically selects and sets the optimal exposure and ISO settings to keep everything looking sharp and clear. So whether you’re shooting a bride walking down the aisle, a ballet recital or even a child’s soccer game, you can relax and shoot with confidence knowing you’ve got the picture you intended.
Accepts Wide-Angle and Telephoto Converter Lenses To expand your creativity, the PowerShot A590 IS is compatible with shooting accessories such as wide and tele converter lenses, High-Power Flash designed for all of the PowerShot models.

By Alex Olson
It takes time to understand that all comments are not will have their desired effects and most people will ignore them. You will have to learn to leave effective comments in order to not waste an opportunity or give the wrong impression of what you wanted to give. Listed below are five ways to take action on effective blogging.
1. The first would be to look around the Internet and be selective on which blog or blogs you will leave your comments on. Choose blogs that compliment your blog-ones that may deal with the same topics you do. Craft your statements to begin the buzz about your blog. Don't just drop into any site and leave comments-you will not get the traffic you want. Focus on what you want and pick great sites to build your traffic. Make sure your comments have a purpose and craft your comments to that purpose.
2. When crafting your comments, know exactly what you are saying. Don't just dump any comment in and hope people will believe what you are saying. Check all your facts before posting your comments. Your blog entries are to get you noticed and hopefully to develop some respect toward you. Write meaningful short statements that are to the point of what you want to say. Be purposeful and always leave a relevant comment to direct traffic to you.
3. When leaving your comments always avoid foul or strong language. There are many ways to get your point across without upsetting the others who use the blog or the owner of the blog. Many, many sites have rules about how to write comments-read them. Contemplate on what you want to say and write an appropriate comment. Be calm and use correct language grammar for your intended blog writing.
4. Don't make comments on blogs or forums and leave them hanging. Check for replies and answer them. There is absolutely nothing worse for you if someone is asking a question about your comment and you never answered. Keep your comments professional and friendly and you will get the buzz about your blog.
5. Don't be rude to others in your comments or answers. If others are rude to you, think about what they are saying and see if you didn't bring it on yourself. Reflect on what you said and what they said and if you must comment-keep it polite.
When you practice these things you can be assured that people will respect you and respond to your blog comments. This, in turn, will drive the traffic you desire and could make you a bundle of money in the process.
Google SEO Basics for Beginners
By Eddie Machaalani
Introduction
Getting indexed by Google can be a pain, but getting highly placed rankings for specific keywords seems to be the nut that not many web developers without SEO (search engine optimization) experience or seo training can crack.
Today we’re going to give you an informative primer on the basics of search engine optimization techniques -- many of which we use everyday to optimize our websites and stay ahead of our competitors.
Step 1. Choosing The Right Keywords
Choosing the right keywords to base your site optimization around is an important first step. General or generic keywords are usually not the best approach, and sometimes it's better to be a little more specific and focus on niche keywords relating to your product or service.
For example, let's talk about www.devedit.com -- DevEdit is our WYSIWYG HTML editing component that drops into browser-based applications.
The problem is, there are a LOT of WYSIWYG HTML editors, but how can we get DevEdit to appear in Google's top 10 rankings? Well, let's see. Trying to optimize for the keyword "HTML" alone would be a tough task, as it's too general. There are HTML editors, HTML tutorials, HTML articles, etc.
We need to be more specific, which means:
1. Targeting a more suitable market that is looking for a content editing solution
2. Competing with fewer websites targeting the same keywords
3. Optimizing for keywords that people actually use when performing searches
Targeting a suitable market will depend on your website, as well as the products and services you offer. Try to be specific with your keywords, and remember that people no longer use single keyword search phrases - the average search phrase contains 3-5 related words.
For example, if you're optimizing for a web development site and you're located in Sydney, Australia, use keywords such as "web development Sydney" or "web development services Australia".
To find out how many websites are competing with your keywords -- either intentionally or not -- simply do a search on Google and note down how many results are returned. In our case, for "online html editor", we're competing with 9,080,000 sites. The more sites that are competing for your keywords, the harder it will be to get on the front page.
Alternatively, to get a rough indication of how many people are actually searching for the keywords you want to optimize your site for, use the Overture search suggestion tool. It's not exact, and doesn't measure Google searches, but it does give a very good estimate.
The Overture search suggestion tool will also provide you with a list of similar keywords, based on the keywords you enter. This can be a great way to find other keywords to optimize your site for.
As a rough guideline, try to optimize every page on your site for a different search phrase. Each search phrase should contain 2 to 3 highly targeted keywords.
Step 2. Your URL and Title Tag
Two of the most determining factors in Google's ranking are your domain name and title tag. For example, a domain name such as:
http://www.web-development-sydney.com will generally get ranked higher than http://www.companyname.com, assuming that they had identical keywords and page content.
For some of us, keywords in the domain name look too unprofessional, and we've already registered our domain, so it’s too late to change. An alternative -- and also a useful tactic -- is to add your keywords into the names of your pages, such as
http://www.companyname.com/web-development-services.html
Your title tag is equally as important as your domain name. Using keywords in your title tag can improve your Google ranking significantly. Trying to achieve a balance of professionalism with keyword density in the title tag however is sometimes a little more difficult.
Going back to our example of a web development company earlier, a good title tag would be:
"Company name provides professional affordable web development services in Sydney Australia."
Usually, the closer to the front of your title tag the keywords are placed, the better.
Step 3. H1 Tags and Keyword Density
Tags seem to have been depreciated by stylesheets these days, and are not used as often as they used to be. The Google ranking algorithm dictates that if you're using a tag, then the text in between this tag must be more important than the content on the rest of the page. By default, H1 tags aren't the prettiest in terms of formatting, so using a CSS style to override the default look is usually a good idea:H1 { color: blue; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 16px }
Sprinkling keywords throughout your page content can also improve your sites keyword density. Keyword density simply means the ratio of optimized keywords to the rest of the content on your page. It is usually expressed as a percentage, and should be between 7% and 10% for each page on your site.
Don't overdo the keyword density, however, but don't overlook it either. A good example would be:Before:
* Company name provides web design and site management services to our clients.
After:
* Company name provides web development services to the Sydney region in Australia
Notice how we use the keywords more efficiently the second time around?
Step 4. Links, Links and More Links
And this leads us to the toughest part of the Google SEO process -- back-links. Back links are websites that link directly to your website. The general principal is the more back links you have, the higher your pages will be ranked, as your website must be good if so many other sites are linking back to it.
If you run a web development company, then adding a simple link to the bottom of each of your client's websites, such as:
Web development by Company Name
... (With your clients permission of course) can help boost your back links, which will help boost your ranking position in searches.
Submitting your site to dmoz.org, Yahoo! and other directories is also an important step to increase the number of sites linking back to yours. Do remember however, that setting up back links takes time. I would recommend emailing 5-10 websites each and every day to request back-links or partnership links (keeping in mind that the sites contacted should be relevant but not competitive) e.g. - If you sell chocolate, partnering with a company that sells Roses may just be a good idea. Within a couple of weeks, you should have a good 100 or so sites happily linking back to yours!
Conclusion
Google can be one tough search engine to crack. Hopefully, however, in this article we’ve provided you with enough basic tips to get started optimizing both yours and your clients website.
